Week 2: Task #2 Understanding Common Core for ELA and Literacy
The Common Core Standards were set in place in
2010 to get states across the nation on the same page. Before the Common Core,
each state was responsible for creating their own standards. This led to major educational
gaps between the states and also led to students not being prepared for college
and their careers. The Common Core Standards address four different categories;
reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language. Each category also
lists standards for “College and Career Readiness”. With these new standards, there is a greater
focus on preparing students for their futures. This preparation is why there is
more attention to collaboration and to the use of informational texts within
the standards.
