Week 2: Task #3 Understanding ELA Instruction

Who is responsible for which portion of the Standards?
               The Standards are split into two sections, K-5 and 6-12. Typically K-5 has the same teacher for every subject so these ELA standards are for across the curriculum. The second section is then split into two further parts. One part for the 6-12 ELA teacher and the other for teachers of history/social studies, science, and technical subjects.

Reading: Text complexity and the growth of comprehension
                In this key feature of the standards the focus is on what the student reads and how well they can do that. As they get older, the complexity of the text they read should increase. Students are expected to make connections within and among different texts. They are also expected to use details from the text to support their understanding.

Writing: Text types, responding to reading, and research
                In this key feature of the standards the focus is on the student’s ability to plan, revise, edit and publish their writing. They are exposed to many writing styles such as argumentative and narrative. Students use the text to support their writing and explore digital tools to publish that writing.

Speaking and Listening: Flexible communication and collaboration
                In this key feature of the standards the focus is on the student’s ability to communicate and collaborate. They learn to listen carefully to others and their ideas as well as evaluate what they hear or see. Students should be able to express their thoughts and feelings in a positive and constructive way.

 Language: Conventions, effective use, and vocabulary
                In this key feature of the standards the focus is on the student’s use of proper grammar and sentence structure. Students expand their vocabulary and achieve an understanding of words and phrases.

             The contents of this book were inspired by one of my students, Mia, from a couple of years ago. She was in preschool at the time and we were writing and illustrating our own books. Week 7: Assignment #2 Second Life Reflection

         Second Life is a 3D virtual environment that can be used in the classroom. I showed this program to the ELA teacher that I am working with and we spoke about some ways it could be incorporated into the classroom. First, teachers can use Second Life to “bring” students to a realistic place that they wouldn’t ordinarily have access to (like the moon or the deep ocean). Organizations like NASA and NOAA have created virtual environments that allow learners to explore those environments. Second, this program allows users to instant message other avatars. This feature can help students develop their reading and writing skills. There are also voice option that lets you speak directly into the microphone/to another person. Lastly, teachers can use Second Life to engage more students and to give them a way of being creative.
