Week 4: Assignment #1 Gaming Literacies

Game: Word Raider
1. What gaming elements provide users the learning content and how?
Text: The instructions on how to play this game are located right underneath the playing screen. They are displayed in two boxes, “how to play” and “game controls.” There is also a vowel bag displaying the vowels you need to use to spell correct words. There is text displayed on each coin and the player has to read that to determine if it’s a correct or incorrect coin/word.
Visual-graphic elements: The player is looking at the screen from a profile perspective and controls the main character using the mouse. If the character runs into something bad (snake, bat, or incorrect coin), the player falls backward and a puff of smoke comes up. You then lose a life.
Audio elements: There are “cave” sounds playing in the background (water dripping). When the character runs into something bad he makes an “oof” sound. Every time you collect a good coin there is a cha-ching sound.

2. What is the goal of the game?
The goal of the game is to use the given vowel pairs to create correct words. There are correct and incorrect coins/words strewn about. If you choose an incorrect coin you lose a coin. Another goal is to complete all five levels.

3. What are the rules of playing this game?
The main character needs to make his way through this cave collecting correct coins. For each level, there is a vowel bag displaying two vowels (oo, oa, oi, etc.). The player needs to create words using those vowels and the coins given. Some of the coins are incorrect and don’t spell anything. If the player picks up an incorrect coin they lose a life. The player has to pick up all of the correct coins in order to complete the level and open up the big stone door. This all has to be done while also avoiding snakes and bats. If you run into one of them you also lose a life. There are five levels to this game.

4. Does this game have any scenario design? If yes, is this a fabricated or embedded in curriculum-related content?
This game does not have any scenario design.
