Assignment #2 Sample ELA Lesson Plan

Grade level: 2nd grade

Common core standards:
ELA RF.2.2b Orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds (phonemes), including consonant blends.
ELA RF.2.3b Know spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams.

Learning outcomes: Students will be able to use common vowel teams to create words.

Instructional activities: Review the common vowel teams with the students. Review sight words that we frequently use. Have each student take out their Chromebook and play the Word Raider game. For those struggling with the game controls, provide a written version of each level. After they are done, challenge each student to design their own video game using common consonant blends.

Assessment: Students will be assessed on their successful completion of the game and their designed video game level.

Debriefing: Have students design a similar game using consonant blends. Design one level.

What cognitive skills does this game help cultivate? This game helps cultivate critical thinking and problem solving skills.

What new literacies skills does this game help to cultivate? This game promotes students identifying the questions, evaluating the information given and synthesizing information to answer questions.

             The contents of this book were inspired by one of my students, Mia, from a couple of years ago. She was in preschool at the time and we were writing and illustrating our own books. This was something I did all of the time with the kids. All I did was take some scrap paper, fold it, and staple the spine. Week 7: Assignment #2 Second Life Reflection

         Second Life is a 3D virtual environment that can be used in the classroom. I showed this program to the ELA teacher that I am working with and we spoke about some ways it could be incorporated into the classroom. First, teachers can use Second Life to “bring” students to a realistic place that they wouldn’t ordinarily have access to (like the moon or the deep ocean). Organizations like NASA and NOAA have created virtual environments that allow learners to explore those environments. Second, this program allows users to instant message other avatars. This feature can help students develop their reading and writing skills. There are also voice option that lets you speak directly into the microphone/to another person. Lastly, teachers can use Second Life to engage more students and to give them a way of being creative.
